What is Chiropractic?
Chiropractic means “practice by hand”, referring to the treatment method of chiropractic adjustment delivered by hand. However, why do we treat patients by hand, or by “adjustments”?
The reason is: bones in your body can get out of alignment/fixated. This is especially problematic for the spine, from which nerves exit to supply the whole body. Any loss of motion or misalignment of the vertebra in the spine can cause irritation of nearby nerves and create a variety of symptoms:
- Localized pain (low back, upper back, neck pain)
- Radiating (traveling) pain; the best example is sciatica, a phenomenon to describe back pain that travels to the leg(s). Other examples of radiating pain from nerve irritation include:
- neck arm/hands,
- neck head (causing headache)
- midback chest.
- Numbness or tingling in the arms or legs
- Burning sensation
- Reactive muscle spasm/guarding
- Loss of muscle strength
- Loss of reflex (severe cases)
- Loss of flexibility
Chiropractors evaluate specifically the skeletal, nervous, and muscular system, and focus on detecting misaligned/fixated vertebra or joints. Once found, we apply gentle force to realign the spine and restore motion. We do offer a variety of adjustment techniques, for those that are not comfortable with the popping sound
Chiropractic adjustments are the foundation of chiropractic care. However, other therapies are commonly used in conjunction with the chiropractic adjustment to decrease pain and muscle spasms, improve flexibility, and reduce recovery time; the adjunctive therapies used in this clinic are listed as follows:
- Massage or manual therapy
- Electrical stimulation
- Therapeutic Ultrasound
- Intersegmental Traction
- Spinal Decompression
- Pain relief gel
As patients start to recover from their condition, we then gradually introduce therapeutic/rehab exercises to improve strength and flexibility in the area. We also address lifestyle issues by providing advice on posture, and encourage weight management through proper diet and nutrition.
